In the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O 'Connor, a very disoriented family of five is taking a “peaceful” trip to Florida. Although the father of the family, Bailey, is afraid of cats, Grandmother brings along her furry friend anyway; to add to this, Grandmother then begins to talk about an old house she remembers from her childhood that is believed along the way. However, it is not. When Grandmother realizes this information is incorrect, instead of telling Bailey to turn around she was wrong, her pride allows her to keep quiet about her realizations. However, before she can become content with herself, she jumps as if someone, maybe even God, hit her for being prideful and kicks the basket where the cat was hiding. In …show more content…
In the story, the Misfits sarcastic attempt to wow the ladies when he says, “I 'm sorry I do not have a shirt on before you ladies … We buried ours before we escaped” tells the reader he is unlike most (O 'Connor 21). He is suspicious and unlike most because he actually shows a little bit of compassion while waiting to complete the murder plot. He attempts to be polite by apologizing for not wearing a shirt. Also, when he is prepared to send the mother and June Star to die, he asks, “would you and that little girl like to step off yonder with Bobby Lee and Hiram and join your husband" ( O’Connor 25)? The Misfit shows kindness in his actions by politely asking instead of demanding the mother and June Star to join Bailey and John Wesley in the walk to death. However, he does not do this with everyone. He told his acquaintances, Hiram and Bobby Lee, to take Bailey and John Wesley away without even hesitating. Hiram and Bobby Lee enjoy the killing; it is almost like they do not think twice about it. On the other hand, Misfit seems like he is always wondering if he is making the right choice by steadily adding to his record if he was to get caught. In the story, Misfit makes the comment about how it is too late for him to make it to Heaven. God could never forgive him, so he keeps on killing. However, he …show more content…
Throughout the story, the author shines a small light on the good inside of the Misfit while the evil tries to overcome him. After the wreck, Misfit has everyone sit on the side of the road; during this time, Bailey leans over and whispers into grandmother’s ear. Grandmother begins to cry, and Misfit says, “Lady, don 't you get upset. Sometimes a man says things he don 't mean. I don 't reckon he meant to talk to you thataway.” This shows that he has some good in him because he instantly sends Bailey and John Wesley away to be killed. To further his goodness, he speaks highly of his family. “"Yes mam, the finest people in the world.God never made a finer woman than my mother and my daddy 's heart was pure gold” (O’Connor 19). He speaks as if his family was the best there ever was. Although, he does speak of the faults when he says, “My daddy said I was a different breed of dog from my brothers and sisters. 'You know, ' Daddy said, 'it 's some that can live their whole life out without asking about it and it 's others has to know why it is, and this boy is one of the latters. He 's going to be into everything” (O’Connor 21)! To further this, he says, “Daddy was a card himself. You couldn 't put anything over on him. He never got in trouble with the Authorities, though. Just had the knack of handling them." This shows that although his family is not perfect; they still have his heart. This is an example of

When asked about his relationship with his brother, the narrator reveals that he “didn’t grow up with [his brother]” (63), however, he did “look up to [his brother]” (63) as a child before his brother moved out. Dee mentions that the narrator’s brother was a “good guy” (63) twice in succession. Later in the same conversation, Dee “places her hand onto [the narrator’s] shoulder” (63), and takes a deep breath before telling him that “[his] brother does a lot of drugs” (63). The way the story reveals that the narrator has “looked up” to his brother but “didn’t grow up with him” suggests that people’s perception of their loved ones do not change after their loved ones make terrible decisions because they believe that their loved ones acted out based on their situation. The narrator mentioning he was just a child when his brother moved out leaves the reader wondering what caused that separation, and whether his longing for his brother stemmed from a childish idolization.…

She claims that “lacking spiritual fulfillment, both Coleridge’s sailor and O’Connor’s grandmother journey through the desert of alienation and experience an epiphany that results in resurrection and rebirth” (n.p.).…

or burning down his house or doing some other meanness to him,No pleasure but meanness”(449). This quote reveals that it seems like the Misfit commits multiple crimes because this is the only obvious pleasure throughout his life. Then this takes me back to my earlier talking of him believing if he killed his parents. Maybe the reason why he said those things is because he believes that the idea of killing is normal, and he doesn't deserve to be punished for murdering or burning. The shift in The Misfits actions but continuously complexity towards his past at the end of the short story, which lead to the killing of the grandmother at the end, leaves no room for hope of The Misfit’s salvation.…

The hate and bitterness of his “snarl” is the final implication as to how the Misfit feels about religion (O’Connor 645). Bellamy insists that the reason for the devilish message in the Misfit’s speech is due to his mission to play to role of the Anti-Christ. Bellamy asserts that, “The central message of the Misfit’s sermon, for a sermon is what his remarks amount to, is a familiar one in Flannery O’Connor’s fiction; there is no middle ground between absolute belief in Christ’s messianic fiction and a belief that like is nasty, brutish, and short,” (200). Katherine Feeley notes that the Misfit “embodies all reason and no faith,” which is the opposite of the faith-based personality of the grandmother (202). As Madison Jones remarks, the Misfit “may be haunted, at times tormented, by vision of Christ raising the dead, but he cannot believe it: he was not there.…
