Analysis Of The Movie 'Chance In The Film'

The film titled ‘Being there” is a movie of deeper meaning and has philosophical elements. The main characters name is Chance, and by making the main characters name chance, the movie already plays on the concept of chance. Chance is an anti-reason and therefore is it the opposite to the tradition of Western philosophy from Plato onwards. Existentialism is philosophical theory that emphasizes the existence of a person as a free and liable person who determines their own life through their acts of the will. In many cases the interpretation of an event could not be more real than the event itself. This is because everyone has different ways to understand things due to various factors like the way they were raised and how they were taught to understand things. No one thinks exactly the same and that means many people can understand an event differently than the event really was. Chance had different events in the movie where he said or did something but people understood it differently than he expected meaning that it wasn’t truly more real than the event itself. However, Chance could be seen as “being there” because although he wasn’t there physically he was there mentally. Chance has observed life through the lens of television and many aspects of life is portrayed and Chance has observed what humans do and how we do it therefore he was “there”. Chance manages to watch the world, and yet somehow remains unaffected by it, however by the buildup of knowledge he still retains his light being and simple personality. Also in many ways chance not there and not communicating when people talk to him about certain things like the economy and he answers by saying things like “That is correct. In a garden, growth has its season. There is spring and summer, but there is also fall and winter. And then spring and summer again…” (dailykos.com) he is talking about gardening but the person he is talking to fails to realize this and uses it as an allegory to understand what he is saying. This shows that he isn’t really communicating or being there because he doesn’t understand what the person is saying. He is just saying these things in a way that makes the other person think that managing an economy and society is like tending a garden.
