The term “hero” has been around since the late fourteenth century; however, the term is of an uncertain origin (Etymology, paragraph 2). Based upon controversial etymology beliefs, Webster’s Dictionary defines a ‘hero’ as an individual that is admired for his or her great acts or fine qualities. According to Joseph Campbell, the author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, an individual must go through the cycle of the hero 's journey. The life of a real life hero is reflected by the epic literary example “The Hero’s Journey” that is exhibited in the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces; therefore, a hero in today’s world must undergo the same twelve stages that are listed in “The Hero’s Journey.” The hero’s journey is known for telling…

After reading the essay “Heroism: Why Heroes are Important” by Scott LaBarge once, I went back again and read it a second time. The second time I read it, I looked specifically for the use of rhetorical appeals, and I then began to write my essay. The first thing I did was use my analysis of LaBarge's use of rhetorical appeals to create my thesis statement: “LaBarge effectively uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, and kairos to convince his audience that heroes are important.” I then looked for specific examples of each appeal I said he used in order to develop support for my thesis.…

It is no secret that Abe Lincoln is the most notable Whig president. His loyalty to the party ran deeply and it dated all the way back to his young adulthood. After leaving home, Lincoln sought to become a man outside of his father’s heavy influence. He latched on to the notion of the ‘self-made man’ and strived to be a successful example of that idea. Whigs represented the hard working, passionate youth of his era and Lincoln described himself as just that.…

The phrase is seen on bumper stickers, Facebook posts, and even t-shirts: “Jesus is not a Republican.” For decades, there has been an underlying assumption in the church that if a person claims to be an evangelical Christian, they are a part of the Republican party. However, Jim Wallis, a New York Times Best-Selling Author, claims that “many Christians [are now] tired of the assumptions and claims by the Religious Right that God was indeed a Republican.” While some citizens within the United States (U.S.) now deny Jesus in the making of their political decisions, He has been present in U.S. politics since the beginning of this country’s existence. Because of this, many people associate Jesus with being a part of one or the other political party…

At their essence, all stories are the same; from George Lucas ' Star Wars and Grimm 's fairy tales to The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and Homer 's The Odyssey. Granted, at face value, there might seem little common ground between Luke Skywalker and Cinderella, or between Dorothy Gale and Odysseus. However, every story plays towards certain experiences-- a progression of trials, triumphs and occasional failures that allow the hero to develop and overcome adversity. This process, called the Hero 's Journey, is a necessary part of the human experience in both fiction and in day to day life. Through it, Cinderella finds love and escapes a life of hardship and Odysseus returns home from war.…
