Popular culture started its rise in the 19th century, having mass accessibility and appeal to the lower class citizens. Popular culture can be categorized as the product of music, fashion, film, celebrity gossip, and television that a majority of society’s population is consumed in. Consequently, mass media has played a major role in ensuring society to be up to date with the latest trends and celebrity gossip. For example, one media site includes Page Six, a major news source for all things popular. The symbolic interactionism relies heavily on the symbolic meaning developed by society through the process of social interaction. The characterization and attitudes of celebrities symbolize what is accepted and the norm for how the rest of society should behave. With being a celebrity it gives them the power to influence individuals, by how they act, what they eat, to what they wear. Induvial will use these celebrity’s trends as inspiration to start acting or dressing differently because it’s seen as desirable. The message taken from Paris fashion week SS16 gave a clear message of the social issue of freeing the nipple. During Saint Laurents runway the models revealed more skin than was has generally been accepted by society. As society moves progressively forward, modesty has lost its significance. The symbolism behind freeing the nipple is to allow equality between men and women by desexualizing women’s breast. The movement aims to point out the hypocrisy between men and women. Men and boys oversexualize women to the point where a woman isn’t allowed to show an equal amount of skin as a man. The movement provides for women to feel safe while being around men and the amount of skin she shows is no longer considered provocative. Others might believe that this movement is for women to want to be provocative and a misinformed reader will see this as having little significance to society.
