Studies show that transgender sex workers often feel pressured into not using a condom if offered more money which makes them highly vulnerable to HIV. In New York City, from 2007-2011, there were 191 new diagnoses of HIV infection among transgender people, 99% were transgender women. Over half of newly diagnosed transgender women were in their twenties. Also, among newly diagnosed people, 51% of transgender women had documentation in their medical records of substance use, sex work, homelessness, incarceration, and sexual abuse.
Being that the United States of America claims to be the land of opportunity Congress should work quickly to pass an Act of Employment Non-Discrimination, to ensure that transgender Americans are judged in the workplace based on their skills, qualifications, and the quality of their work. Adequate and affordable housing is essential to the economic security and overall wellbeing of every American. Unfortunately, social services and homeless shelters that work with Transgender people often fail to help transgender homeless people, including denying them shelter based on their gender identity, inappropriately housing them in a gender group they do not identify with, and failing to address related issues that face transgender homeless adults and youth.
Local, state, and federal governments should collectively prohibit housing discrimination on the basis of gender identity. Social services and shelters should provide appropriate services to transgender people in a non-discriminating manor, including housing people in their appropriate housing them in a gender group that co-relates to their gender identity.
