Nurses are team players, caregivers, comforters, and advocates that know how to be compassionate, caring, empathetic, selfless, and self-aware. Without nursing as a profession, physicians would have too much stress on their shoulders that could make their risk for health problems greater. Nurses provide patients with the necessary day to day attention needed for recovery. Henderson (1966) stated that nursing “Assist the person, sick or well, in performance of activities and help the person gain independence as rapidly as possible” (as cited in Masters, 2014, p. 52). Being a nurse is not about caring for the sick. Whether healthy or sick, a nurse help someone advance forward with success through support and encouragement. If nursing was not a respected and needed profession, the percentage for people being treated equally and effectively within the healthcare system would be low. The person is whomever being cared for that is made up of emotions and opinions that they express with other people. The person can include families, groups, and communities. As stated by Orem (1985), the environment is all “Physical, chemical, biologic, and social contexts within which human beings exist; environmental components include environmental factors, environmental elements, environmental conditions, and developmental environment” (as cited in Master, 2014, p. 60). Internal environment includes the mindset in which the patient is in. An example of external environment includes temperature. It is very important that, as a nurse, you should look pass the individual and pay close attention to how they interact with their surroundings. The third domain, health, refers to both wellness and illness. The body must adjust on its own or with the help of external sources to maintain equilibrium. Neuman (2002) said that health is “a continuum of wellness to illness” (as cited in Masters, 2014, p. 63). Health is the same as the absence of illness because, as previously stated, health is a continuum that changes but is still one in the same.
