The Dangers of being Certain Though doubt has always held a negative connotation in my mind, a dark shadow that looms over certainty, truth, and progress, John Patrick Shanley, through his film, not only claims but makes us feel quite the opposite: that doubt is in fact a valuable asset in gaining an objective view when determining “good” from “bad” and discovering the truth. Stanley utilises the two main characters in his film to depict the dangers of acting upon certainty without doubt. In 1997’s film "Soul Food," I was excited to see a movie that didn't represent an American family by typical ruins. " Soul Food" is a triumph because it never loses sight of the importance of family, even as its family members transgress and quarrel. The storyline focuses on the lasting influence of the family matriarch (played wonderfully by Irma P. Hall), Big Mama. Her kindhearted and wise soul holds the family together. When she dies due to complications of diabetes, her daughters must overcome their disparities to maintain the family.…

The movie titled "Liberty: 3 Stories About Life & Death" follows the lives and stories of three close friends whose appetite for life and struggles with illness and death are recorded in three separate parts. While the film exposes the sadness and tragedy that is associated with life-threatening disease and its consequences, it is also a beautiful story that explores deep connections in a close circle of lesbian friends who, despite the adversities, celebrate family, love, and life. The first part of the film, titled "Death to Life," tells a story of 66-year-old Joyce Fulton whose terminal two-year battle with brain cancer is documented in portrayed as moving backward in time. The part begins with Joyce laying on her death bed as she is surrounded by her lesbian ‘family' members who all gathered to celebrate her life and be there for her in her death.…
