When I was younger my neighbour, Matthew, was one of my best friends. Just like Gus, I haven't seen him for a long time, as when we were both in the fifth grade he was forced to move to Calgary as his dad got a new job. I always remembered him as the funny, happy and playful Mathew from the past, however looking at his Facebook and Instagram I can see that now he is moving into a negative future. Matthew would love to play outside with me and a few of the neighbourhood kids, and to be the center of the attention,and I have always imagined him continuing to do so. But looking at his photos on Facebook I can see now that he has moved into a period of isolation and depression. This is very difficult to with, because his personality change was so drastic and completely opposite to my predictions. Just like Gus I have will forever continue to compare and contrast the past identity to the future identity because it's the only one we truly know.
We can not accurately predict someone's future, as they can change on the people and environment around them. In the short story, Gus compares his father from years ago to his father now. And just like me, I continue to compare my old friend from the past to the new friend from the
