Francis Macomber is “very tall, very well built if you did not mind that length of bone, dark, his hair cropped like an oarsman, rather thin-lipped, and was considered handsome” though his life falls apart when he “had just shown himself, very publicly, to be a coward” (Hemingway 122). Even he, a womanizer who died nearly sixty years ago understood why this was such a problem. With the world we live in today it should not be so radical to think that gender is a bit more fluid than previously thought. There are no flat characters in our world, and Hemingway made sure there was no flat characters in his world either. His push to make each character be more than just a stereotypical man and his wife is quite admirable. This should be a lesson that we should bring into the way we think and carry ourselves on a daily basis.…
