Then Henry was sent back to the front after his break he is wounded by an explosion for a mortar round. After his recovery, he finds out the war is going very poorly. Then Frederick comes back from the front and meets up with Catherine again, and Frederic and Catherine end up falling in love with each other and they end up having a baby together, but Catherine passes away after giving birth (Overview-Arms). In For Whom the Bell Tolls the setting is during the Spanish Civil War. Robert Jordan, an explosives expert, who works closely with Pablo and Pilar behind the Fascist lines. As he stays around the gypsy-guerilla band he meets Maria, a young and beautiful peasant girl, who was imprisoned, brutalized, and raped by the Fascists before escaping and being taken in by Pablo and Pilar. In both novels, the story is told by Frederic Henry and Robert Jordan, they both are very important to the story because the novels are written by the journeys they go through and the people they met during the journeys. During their journeys they both met people who help them out during theirs and helping them make decisions. In A Farewell to Arms Frederic Henry meets Rinaldi who helps Jordan out a lot and is very protective of him (Overview-Arms). In For Whom the Bell Tolls Robert Jordan meets Pablo and Pilar who take him in their gypsy-guerilla band and fed him, gives him a place to stay, and they also help with his plan of blowing of the bridge (Overview-Bells). Also both, Frederic and Jordan both end up falling in love and their love ends in tragic ways. For instance, in A Farewell to Arms Frederic Henry meets Catherine Barkley (Cat), an English nurse for the Red Cross, at the hospital and they catch more and more feelings for each other every time that they talked. So they end up falling in love and Cat fins out that she is pregnant, and while giving birth to the child she passes away from internal bleeding form a the difficult birth (Overview-Arms).
