A Eulogy For Son

Decent Essays
Son,

I closed my eyes for but a moment and suddenly a man stood where a boy used to be. I may not carry you now in my arms, but I will always carry you in my heart. You have given me so many reasons to be proud of the man you have become; the proudest moment for me is telling others that you are my son. Spread your wings and fly, chase your dreams, but always know the road that'll lead you home again. I love you now and forever. Congratulations on this special achievement, grad.

It’s taken me a while to get to where I am today, and I must thank you for most of it. A Stepdad was never a thing I thought I’d have – I had become so used to the idea of one Dad and one Mom, that any other relationship seemed inconceivable. As a eight -year-old, it didn’t really feel like I had a say in anything, including you – which, let’s face it, I didn’t. I must have thought you coming into our lives would weaken the close bond I’d formed with my Mom, and I didn’t want to lose that.…

I knew that something was wrong the moment I bit into the pretzel nugget. As the crunchy exterior gave way to the savory filling within, my mouth was flooded with an unfamiliar taste. Heart sinking, I recognized exactly what it was, though I had never tasted it before. Perfectly consistent with the scent of my parents’ daily breakfast, my palate identified it as peanut butter. Panic set in as I rushed around seeking a trash can to expel the anaphylactic time bomb sitting in my mouth.…

Today had been long. It was one of those days that Cassidy wanted to end with a bear hug from her dad. Her dad was always the person to brighten her day or least from what she remembers. When she was little, he would feed her popsicles for tender bitten tongues and coax straws filled with bubbles of ginger ale past pale nauseous little lips. His arms were the only place she was willing to sleep; even at thirteen Cassie wished that she still could.…

Good evening fellow grads, teachers, families and friends, I would like to thank you all for giving me the honour of speaking at our commencement ceremony. As I stand before you today and look upon the 400+ students of my own graduating class I must confess something. While I would love to stand here and reminisce over all the pleasant experiences we shared together, from sports games, to spirit assemblies, to academic activities, cracking some jokes along the way, the truth is that any such action would feel disingenuous and superficial. Despite being in the same building for the past 4 years, perhaps even participating in similar events, every graduating student in this room has had a vastly different high school experience, and vastly…
