As future working counselors in the field of mental health, the importance of understanding the ethical values and the role they play is paramount when dealing with people with mental health issues. We not only should observe each one of them, but also grasp the meaning of being ethically responsible. Ethical competence is both an ethical and a legal concept which allows for practitioners to protect and serve their clients (Corey, Corey, Corey, & Callanan, 2015 p.305). Each principle gives guidance on the professional conduct, in order to maintain responsible conduct. It is the supervisor’s responsibility to hold their students responsible for the welfare of those they serve and this is the premise to every principle. One of the principles that stood out for me is that individuals shall engage in only those aspects of the professions that are within the scope of their professional practice and competence (ASHA, 2010, para. 3). With this being said supervisors must ensure that they understand the level of experience each of their students are capable of. According to ASHA (2010), supervisor cannot delegate the responsibility for clinical decision making and management to the student (para. 4). As students they can only make client recommendations and decisions with the approval of supervisors. Moreover, the supervisor must inform the client or the client’s family of the qualifications and credentials of the student (ASHA, 2010, para. 4).
