Sprue Run-Womancare Alliance is a domestic violence project that helps anyone in a domestic violence situation. The organization is also known to provide resources for anyone who calls the hotline. If a homeless person calls the hotline the worker will provide a list of area shelters they could go to, even though the caller is not a victim of domestic violence. These two organizations joined together in 2013 when funding from the state was changed and could only go to one of the projects. Instead of fighting each other for the funding they joined together, and can now better serve Piscataquis and Penobscot counties with offices located in Bangor and Dover-Foxcroft. Women can come to these locations to meet with staff members, and attend support groups. There are outreach offices located in Milo, Dexter, Millinocket, and Greenville. A staff member will go to these locations once a week to meet with women who live in the area that cannot make it to Dover or Bangor. The organization also has a community center, education and support groups, transitional housing, hotline, safe houses and a shelter. There is approximately 30 staff members who work in the two locations. Advocacy, legal, residential and community resource are the four programs these staff members work in. Legal services are provided to women who call looking for advice regarding the legal system. Legal advocates are able to provide specialized information that a woman may need when going to court.
