A Doll House is a three act play written by Henrik Ibsen. The play opens on Nora walking into her living room carrying many boxes. The day this play opens up on is Christmas Eve and she has gone out to buy her three kids Christmas presents. Torvald (Helmer) is frustrated with Nora’s spending habits for most of the play. Helmer has received a job promotion at the bank and Nora is ecstatic because of the money raise the family will be receiving. After this conversation, Mrs. Linde shows up and asks Helmer and Nora if they can help her with getting her a job at the bank. Krogstad hears about this and is very angry with Nora and plans to tell her secret they are keeping together. Dr. Rank shows up the house, who is Torvald’s close friend, and tells Nora how he is close to dying. He then explains to Nora how he is in love with her. Later in the play, during the costume party, Mrs. Linde and Krogstad are talking in the Helmer’s living room. During this time, you learn that these two individuals were once in love, but Mrs. Linde left Krogstad for a wealthier man. Earlier in the play Krogstad threatens Nora with a letter telling the lie they are keeping together. The letter describes how Nora forges her father’s signature for money that she used for a trip her and Helmer will take together. Secrets played a huge role in her life and when the truth finally came out, she decided to run away from the problem instead of fixing what she had done. Nora says, “The way I am now, I’m no wife for you.” (Ibsen 846) Nora does not think she is fit to be a mother or wife anymore, so she leaves the house. Secrets are very damaging to the people involved. Secrets can ruin a person’s trust for events to come. Torvald will not be able to trust Nora even when she does return to him.
