Okonkwo in the book, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, rebels against himself and his own personal beliefs. His whole life he strives to become a true man, showing no weakness always pushing himself to be everything opposite of his father who was said to be someone who “lacked responsibility. He was poor, lazy, and neglectful of his wife, and he did not plan for the future. During his life, he never took a title and, therefore, never gained status or respect from the villagers.” (Achebe). Throughout the whole book Okonkwo wants to be a leader and looked up to by his village but that all takes a turn as soon as he rebels against himself. By the middle-end of the book, Okonkwo gives up. He shuts down and starts to not care about his goals and ends up giving up on himself. He begins to be put through great challenges which he finds unbearable, giving up completely and taking the more easy and less stressful way out by committing
