I have always been interested in the reasoning behind what makes a person the way they are and what causes them to do what they do. With all the material studied in Humanities 100, I came to understand that society is the main cause for a person’s character and actions. Throughout the term I grew to understand the way people are affected by society and how it changes and affects the actions they take in their lives. All the materials read in this class have helped me learn to understand how society and parental figures can affect a person and their actions in life. In general, this term helped me learn and absorb information about the ways society’s expectations and pressures can potentially affect people’s character. The materials in this class that seemed to affect and help me learn the most out of all the texts were these four: Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Equus by Peter Shaffer, Columbine by Dave Cullen, and my favorite: Four Major Plays by Henrik Ibsen (Both A Doll’s House and Hedda Gabler). These texts particularly exhibited that society and its expectations of a person can really affect a person’s actions and character. One thing I particularly learned that I had never heard of before was Antonio Gramsci’s concept of hegemony. Before this class I had never discussed or thought of hegemony and it was a topic I’ve really taken from this class.
