Bruce Cameron proves again that taking risks is important to keep others safe through the character’s actions. In this part of the story, Bailey is reincarnated as a police dog named Ellie. Bailey and her current owner travel to a country that has just been hit by a devastating earthquake. Bailey was brought there to help search for survivors through the wreckage of fallen buildings. Not expecting to find much, as they have only found those already dead, they search one more, but Bailey finds out someone is alive. “ ... ’Whatever is in those barrels is toxic. Going to need a cleanup crew’ … I dove headfirst into a narrow space next to the dead person, digging my way forward. My feet encountered a wet spill and started to sting, and the smell from the chemicals was so intense it blotted out everything else … after a moment, I saw a woman huddled in the corner of the shaft, pressing a cloth to their face. Her eyes were big as they regarded me.” (Cameron, 232). In life, people need to push on and do some risky or difficult things for the safety of others. They could be physically hurt but they know the challenges and only think of the end result of keeping others safe. This supports my theme because Bailey knew there were some potentially harmful chemicals but he could smell the scent of someone still alive farther in. Even if it was harmful to him, he knew he would have to do it to make sure the lady would live and not be
