Medical Degree: A Career Analysis

A doctor of medicine degree is a terminal degree earned by clinicians upon completion of medical school. Many medical schools require applicants to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) as well as complete at least a bachelor’s degree in whatever major they may choose, however most applicants choose to have a science major as it is the most relevant to their field of study. Admission to medical schools in the United States is extremely competitive as an average of only 32.3% of applicants are accepted from 2013-2015. In the students final year, they must pass a series exams such as the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Although M.D. degree is among one of the most challenging and time consuming to earn, it is also one of the most rewarding.
Upon completion of Medical School, individuals choose to go to a residency program based on what they decide the type of medicine they will be practicing. Residency programs last anywhere from three to eight years, depending on what the individual specializes in. This program covers general medicine and specific specialities where residents perform a wide array of extensive duties such as taking patient histories, attending medical conferences, conducting physical examinations on patients, and interpreting information sent from laboratories.
