Deontology: A Case Study Of Ethical Dilemmas

Lauren, having been only with the company for a short time is faced with a dilemma in her career as a quality engineer. The firm she works for is "a highly respected technology company." (Case study 1). The main issue at hand is whether or not Lauren should pass the product, given that it has marginally failed the stress tests. She has gone to her superiors and they have suggested they pass the product regardless of the test results, and now Lauren must choose whether or not to follow direction or remain true to the contract by reporting the findings and rejecting the product. Lauren must weigh her options and decide which course of action would be the most ethical according to her. Lauren has three basic options to choose from, she must …show more content…
She has a duty to her co-staff to be helpful and not work against other people in her firm, and as a good worker in the field she should decide to pass the product because it will be at her own wishes and the wishes of the workers of the firm. In contrast the duties she has as a quality engineer would be to not allow the passing of any product that does not meet he standards that have been set. As Lauren must choose she must think what her duties are in this role, the duties that of the engineer or co-worker. furthermore, she must see if the duties are overlapping and in anyway possibly working with each other to help make a more informed …show more content…
Lauren must know that whichever decision she makes "... there is always opposed an equal reaction" (Sir Isaac Newton. her first decision can be that the outcome from passing the product could result in a possible glitch in the product and the malfunction of the product when in use, and leading to defaming the company name, while maintaining good connections with her boss. Whereas if she decides not to pass the product she risks having her bosses angry or offended by her, which can lead to workplace mistrust and removal of her potential to grow quickly where she is liked well, while no harm would have come from the imperfect products when in use in real life. Utilitarianism "Greatest happiness for the greatest number" , is what she must consider when deciding as with consequentialism this is the best course of action when making a sound
