“Taking a break from social media for a week should be an easy task,” I thought to myself. Oh boy, was I wrong! When I sat down and thought about how much time a day I spend on social media, mindlessly scrolling through posts I don’t really care about, I was surprised. I didn’t think I spent that much time on social media. On a daily basis, I spend about 2-4 hours on Netflix, Facebook, Instagram, and other forms of social media collectively. A Digital Diet was just what I needed in order to cut back on my dependence, on what others might call an “addiction to”, social media. Growing up with technology it is easy for current the generation to allow social media to control their daily lives, but it is possible to steer away from that dependence.
A Digital Diet is very similar to a food diet. I am restricting myself from the consumption of social media and pretty much anything that needs a screen to function. Basically, I’m going to stop doing what I’ve done for the past 7 years for an entire week. I’m curious to see how taking part in this “diet” will affect my life since my life currently revolves around consuming social media. Is it even possible to

Going cold turkey and cutting myself off from any and all forms of social media was seeming increasingly impossible. So, I decided that the only forms of social media I was allowed during my internet cleanse were: Texting, Calling, and my computer to do school-related work. That meant no Netflix, no YouTube, no Instagram or Facebook. I could already see this was going to be a daunting task. I started by deleting all forms of social media off my phone and tablet. While deleting each app one by one, I felt a sense of relief and calm. Then almost immediately after the calm came the storm. I felt as though a part of me was just deleted. I was so dependent on these apps to get me through the day. I didn’t know what to do without
