The story, “A Devil and Tom Walker” has many important themes. These themes are important, because they make the story play out in a certain way. Some of these important themes include, greed, values, religion, manipulation, bargains, moral decay, temptation, morality and corruption, misery and evil vs. good. This story has the theme of greed, because it shows that Tom is greedy and that is why he ends up the way he ends up. He is known throughout his town, Charles Bay that he is greedy. His greediness affects him so much, that he sells his soul to the devil for money. When Tom first meets the devil, he offers him the treasure for his soul, he declines to spite his wife. He then asks his wife to make the same deal, she dies attempting to accept the deal. He then agreed to the devils terms. His greed is his downfall. His regret at the end of the story does not change his fate. This story also has a theme of values. This story shows it has a theme of values, because his choices reflect his valuing material, financial prosperity and wealth over the wellness of others. This story shows it has a theme of moral decay, because in the beginning of the story Tom’s morals are not in the right place but even as time goes on they decay even more. Eventually Tom becomes so immoral he is basically related to the devil. At first, Tom hesitated to agree to the devils terms, even though there is something in it for him. Slowly, Old Scratch hacks away at Tom’s morality until it decays completely. He can look a poor man in the face who he bled out of money and claim he hasn’t made a penny off
