Political Theory Personal Statement

I have a deep-seated passion for fixing injustice in the world, particularly the inequality of women, including the systemic violence they face in our contemporary societies. Political theory has given me a framework in which to pursue the desire I have, to understand these issues in an educated context. This has led to my fascination with the writings of political thinkers, frondeurs, philosophy, international law, and the freedom of sexuality. I intend to purse feminist political theory, especially in context to Islam. Theses bodies of writing are leading me to seek to bridge the misconceptions between these fields. I want to understand as much about the way the world works as I possibly can. Once one understands how a system works, one can critically analyze and develop ways to improve it. Assignment I: Political Continuum Lluvia Herrera Policy I: Understanding Social Welfare Policy Wichita State University Assignment I: Political Continuum After taking the Political Typology quiz my results described me as hard-pressed skeptic. When reading the description I can say that I agree with some of it, for example I am distrustful of the government because I don't believe that they are corrupt and do what is best for a specific group of individuals and not the entire United States. I definitely lean more to the Democratic side, I believe that good things come with hard work, however; I also believe that some individuals need extra help to get things to happen.…

I am interested in going to Badger Girls State because this would be an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity and a privilege for me. My ancestors have always been involved in politics, from signing the Mayflower Compact, being written about in George Washington’s letters, fighting for women’s suffrage, and even now, voting, and voicing their opinions in the elections. I not only grew up learning about politics, but want to pursue a career as a political science teacher. I don’t believe my generation fully understands politics and how important it is for them to vote and get involved in politics. I want to change this in my own classroom.…

During my years at Mount Olive High School, I have been involved in investing money I have earned during various jobs into a custodial brokerage account. This task that I have undertaken has allowed me to gain an intricate knowledge of the stock market and the inner workings of Wall Street which I believe has gifted me with an advantage over others who are majoring in business. More recently, as a result of the upcoming election, I have become more involved and aware of the political sphere and the ideological clashes which have arisen during one of the most consequential elections in recent history. This has caused me to begin writing opinion pieces regarding politics and culture that once finished I will submit them to my local newspaper to be published under opinion columns. In doing this I have kept myself active in intellectual and financial pursuits which have added value to me as an applicant to Montclair State University.…

Political ideology and social patterns After completing the typology quiz - and granted some of the questions were tough to answer since I felt like my ideologies fit in the middle of those two extremes - I wasn’t surprised to find myself placed along side with 15% of the public as a solid liberal. Which I believe is pretty accurate in terms of self-identification if you ask me. Reason being is that when I investigated further into their social background characteristics I couldn’t help but agree with the majority of the stances they took. For instance, according to people-press.org - the website in which I took said quiz - solid liberals are generally affluent, highly educated (heh..and they called me stupid?), very optimistic about…

Although the modern world still faces many troubling issues, it is important to recognize and be appreciative of the progress that has been made in decades past. One of the most fundamental changes that have taken place throughout history is the feminist movement and its liberating effects on women. Many places around the globe, including even the most advanced Western societies, have struggled with rulings of patriarchal societies. This means that women have been ostracized within their own society where men naturally inherited power over them. As a result of women remaining voiceless throughout much of our history, the application of feminist criticism to works of literature is significant to our understanding of patriarchal power.…

As a young girl, my head was always up in the clouds. Sure, my favorite book was a 300 page novel on the early life of Abraham Lincoln and I was playing the piano before I could even count to a number that high, but I had absolutely no grasp of the social phenomenon that existed around me. I never questioned why my parents would excuse my brother for behavior that I would be punished for. I was never jealous of him, and we got along fine as children; perhaps I thought my parents were gentle with him due to his ADHD.…

Every person has their own political theory, whether they realize it or not. In a sense, a political theory is our ideas on how government and society should work. As a person becomes more educated and reads the works of other political and philosophical writers, the political theory expands. My political theory is a combination of not only my own opinions, but the ideas originally created by theorists such as John Locke and John Stuart Mill. Human nature is the beginning of any great political theory.…

There is no doubt that racism, classism, and prejudice, amongst other injustices persist within our social structure, but we often tend to ignore the more prominent issue within the spectrum, which includes women’s rights. Whether it’s a matter of simple gender roles or excruciating violence with her domestic partner, women around the world continuously experience the hardships of being born a woman. Prior to enrolling in my Women Studies course, I would have never thought about half the issues that are so clearly gender specific. It was my newly obtained knowledge and curiosity that led me to a new way of thinking as I learned about one of the most important women in my life. I interviewed my mom on how it was like to grow up as a woman in Mexico (her place of birth).…

Growing up, I was raised in a conservative, Christian, upper-middle class home. At a young age, I listened and asked questions concerning what my parents and family members were discussing when the news came on. As I got older and started thinking more for myself, I realized I was blindly agreeing with my parents ideas on politics. It wasn’t until around sophomore year in high school that I really became fascinated with politics and the differences between liberals and conservatives. From there I constantly followed multiple news sources dealing with politics.…

This chapter is going to shed light on two distinctive feminist standpoint theorists: Dorothy E. Smith and Patricia Hill Collins. Among other feminist standpoint theorists, the feminist critiques of these two women stand out for me as applicable when analyzing Umm Zakiyyah's trilogy If I Should Speak. The mutuality Smith and Collins have is that they have sought a sociology which takes women's experience as a vantage point where they could see the full picture of society. They are empiricists who experienced marginalization in the patriarchal or racist society whether as housewives or professional and academic women, and of course for Collins as an African-American woman.…
