It was almost a year ago that my Father died. It was a day like this, grey and chill. Some hiker came up missing and a search party was called. As usually Dad’s great big, bay horse crossed God’s Earth and found the man. Why? My Father asked him to. That was Thor. Nobody could ride him but Dad. It wasn’t his fault what happened. So today I’m looking out the window feeling the long year coming to its unwanted anniversary. I’m angry because Mom and I are arguing again. She says with Dad’s money gone we can’t afford a horse with no rider. We rescued Thor from an auction yard in the next county. Life is busy for a farrier and their time is nothing like a 9 to 5. I smiled weakly and tried to be courteous. I’ll get Beauty for you. Garrett was set up when I got back. Beauty was old hat to shoing and slept through most of the time. Through the smoke from the hot shoe, “So what’s on your mind kid?” I told him mom wanted to sell Thor, said we needed the money and we couldn’t afford the extra mouth. I was looking at our Aussie Shepherd gnawing an old …show more content…
The one Thor was used to held too many memories. He was not happy to be tacked up. He knew what I intended. It was not easy to keep from shaking knowing I was about to mount up. I had to use the fence in the round pen. Thor’s back was over my head. He would shift constantly to keep me off him. I’d lunge him still he sweated and try again. Thor would shuffle some more with his ears half down, stamping the ground hard in defiance. Telling him to cooperate and he’d shake his black mane, snorting. When I did manage to mount him, lathered from work but still full of energy, he danced around. Then my world spun. My legs scraped the corral fence. I tumble over the other side. I got back on to be thrown off again. I yelled and pointed . Thor ran head low in that direction, the devil in him. My body ached all over and I had trouble thinking clearly and everything was slightly bright. I took the saddle off in defeat and walked Thor till he cooled so the chill wouldn’t get

John Grady says,“They rode out along the fenceline and across the open pasture-land.. The leather creaked in the morning cold” (McCarthy 30). This shows that to get their daily duties done, they are blessed to have a horse to ride so that they can cut the work time. This novel also shows that the horse walk many many miles with these humans and that could be part of the reason that there is so much trust that happens between the two. Though the horse is always carrying the human around and it could have a lot more power than the human does, because of its mass and body size, it still listens to what the owner wants it to do.…
