Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that slowly progresses as a person ages. Alzheimer’s disease effects brain memory and also brain function. This happens because the brain cells slowly begin to die off. Normally when our brain cells die off, new ones take their place. For Alzheimer’s patients this is not the case. The dead cells are never replaced by new ones. This is what causes the memory loss and the loss of brain function. Most of the time Alzheimer’s patients will remember long past memories but not short term memories. Alzheimer’s disease isn’t just about the memory loss and loss of brain function, it’s about the difficulties that come from it.

Alzheimer’s disease really doesn’t just affect the patient. It affects everything. The doctors, nurses, and the family. As the progression of the disease furthers, the symptoms and complications will get worse. The medicines will only get strong and sooner or later the medicines will no longer help. The patient will gradually get worse and worse as they age and eventually will have to be put on 24/7 care. The research for a cure for Alzheimer’s is still on going, but as of now there is still no cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s affects many different parts of the patient’s life. From the patients family to the patients neurological condition. The patient’s family will begin to get upset because their loved one doesn’t remember their name or even who they are. They will also forget friends names and maybe even forget who their friend is all together. Alzheimer’s patients will also forget birthdays and other important dates like Thanksgiving or even Christmas. Apraxia is what they call the neurological problems of Alzheimer’s patients. Apraxia causes problems with certain motor skill movements. Examples are having problems with moving mouth when trying to eat or even moving tongue when talking. Aphasia is another neurological condition Alzheimer’s patients will face. Aphasia is a disorder that makes people have difficulties when using words or trying to understand words. Aphasia is normally found in patients that have had a stroke or brain damage but it can also be found in Alzheimer’s patients as well because of the loss of brain
