The purpose of this paper is to obtain a better understanding of an individuals values, beliefs, perspectives, traditions, and overall competency of health literacy of an individual from another culture other than my own. By understanding these differences, I hope to gain knowledge that will embrace and improve my own cultural awareness. This understanding of cultural diversity will help me flourish as a health care provider. To further understand these differentiations, I performed a cultural interview and health literacy assessment on Roya Hajostad on September 18, 2016. Roya defines the Iranian family as the father, mother, and the children. Separation and divorce are not commonly practiced in Iran. Couples that are divorced are shamed by society and the individuals are left feeling guilty. As a culture, Iranians have a very negative outlook on divorce and all measures should be taken to work out differences in order to keep the family together. It is important that the children feel loved and highly valued and shown affection by all members of the family. They are the primary focus of attention. The child is expected to have proper behavior in public, good manners, good grades, and be respectful to others. Misbehavior is not tolerated, especially stealing. When a child is misbehaving, they are punished by means of a time-out, loss of privileges, or the parents will not show them any attention. A person’s lifestyle and decisions regarding health care are influenced by their culture and religion. As a health care provider, I must respect the choices and decisions of my patients, even if I may not agree with those choices. The health literacy assessment allowed me to have a better appreciation for the importance of determining a patient’s health literacy level to provide excellent individualized care. I believe that from a Christian worldview perspective, it is important to be culturally competent in order to love and better serve those we take care of as the Bible instructs us
