End Game Critical Analysis Matty Kursar
Overview: 'End Game', was a weird and wonderful experience in its own right. Although not necessarily packed full of dramatic tension and quirky hooks that catch the audience’s attentions and drag them around like dogs on very short leads (like many absurdist performances do) there is still plenty to talk about the construction and performance of 'End Game'.

Themes: To begin this analysis of themes I believe the easiest way will be to throw out ideas that the play attempted to tackle and then break them down into the key components of how and where in the play they can be found.
Some of the key themes were the ideas of the pain and suffering associated with 'loneliness' and 'isolation'. This isn't

This ‘dying’ can be seen to be associated with the isolation of the characters. The constant reminders of death and pain when seeing the characters brings forth ideas regarding the effects prolonged isolation from either their senses (Cloves Movement, Hamm’s Sight, Parents Hearing) or society in general considering the characters current suspension in a non-realistic world. ‘End Game’ tries to show through these that isolation is a situation that is impossible for a human to maintain their life and sanity in. This association of isolation with inevitable death and gloom is one of the key ideas in the text that is presented to the …show more content…
A lot of the connections I personally have created regarding these themes very closely group into the idea that the performance was in an absurdist style giving it reason to be as ridiculous and outlandish as it was. This connotation going into the performance that since it was absurdist in nature many of the obviously planned ideas were simply the ridiculous play doing what it was good at, distracting the audience from some of the deeper, more complex themes that could be ascertained from ‘End Game’. This distraction (as well as the lack of dramatic tension in the play causing slight boredom and general lack of interest from the audience) was the brunt of the reason that these themes slipped past most of the audience. I believe these last 2 themes were extremely unsuccessfully presented to the

This play was one of the longest plays I had ever sat in on, but it didn’t feel like it. The characters and the story kept making me want more. It was that good! This play, however, did provide more than just entertainment. It provided a sense of wonder, wonder about the lives of the characters, what they felt, what they thought, and what they did.…

Death is something that humans do not really want to think about often, but when talked about most either fear or are uncertain about death. Most people on the planet try to put off death as long as they can, and if they are in a condition where they could possibly die, they will tend to flee or try to avoid the situation. People would prefer to put death off because on Earth people know their position in life, they have a sense of comfort, where death is just a big uncertainty which brings a lot of questions such as what happens after I die. The play, Everyman, is categorized as a morality play about how people view death and was written in the late 15th century and was first printed in 1945 (Jokinen, 2010). A mortality play, according to Merriam-Webster (2017) is “an allegorical play popular especially in the 15th and 16th centuries in which the characters personify abstract qualities or concepts (such as virtues, vices, or death)”.…

When I first heard about the play in class I had no idea what I was actually going to be looking at. The day of the play, I walk in and notice art in the main lobby. One piece that stuck out in particular was the one with the two skeletons entwining. The painting to me made me envision the couple growing old and dying together.…

In the play Endgame, written by Samuel Beckett, there is a particular passage that involves two harmless characters, Nagg and Nell, giggling over their sons’ sadness and woeful state of mind. When reproducing the dialogue between these two parents, this passage conveys how these two laugh and make fun of their own son while he sinks into depression. In addition, Nell, the mother, oddly compares suffering with happiness and positive feelings. Because, in her own way it is allowing her to escape the troubles and suffering that she experiences everyday while being trapped in a foul trash can. Although, at the same time she realizes that this recurring feeling of desolation will never exit her life and it only becomes a part of her not so humorous daily routine.…

Intricate details on the scenery made the buildings feel authentic and inviting, grabbing my attention from the moment I walked in the theatre. The costuming was also fantastic, portraying the time period well and adding even more authenticity to the production. All of these individual aspects of a play production acted as an important role, but none of them caught my attention as much as the storyline. I was entwined in the story from the moment the stage lights came on, engulfing myself in the man-made atmosphere presented in front of me. The story went on to tell a tale of a greedy…

A Discussion of Endgame in terms of Apocalyptic Ending and Eco-critical Perspective Endgame, by Samuel Beckett, is a phenomenal play that questions life, death, existence, and meaning. The fact that it was written by someone who believes life is beyond human rationality, makes it more difficult and even meaningless to analyze the play, and try to deduce from it. However, underlying its absurdity, I believe there lies a harsh reality about dying and ending.…

Antigone was written by Sophocles in around 442 BCE, but it was not his only piece of literature (Classical Literature, 2009). Before the writing of Antigone, Sophocles had also written Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, and Seven against Thebes (Classical literature, 2009). Therefore, the story is categorized as drama in the classical period. Antigone was written when the national issues were held dear and were of great concern in Greece. For example, there was a thrilling and brutal war between the Greeks and Samos.…
