Personal Narrative: A Conversation Of Identity

Improved Essays
Some time ago, Vera and I had a conversation about identity. We were catching up after some time of not seeing each other and she asked me what I thought of a friend that we both knew. Curious, I asked her what she meant by “what I thought of said friend”. I wasn’t sure if she was trying to dig up some juice or if she encountered a certain situation with said friend and needed my verification for the judgement she had formed on her.

“No, I mean like, when someone asks you if you know L. What would you say?” Vera replied.

“I guess I’d say she’s… nice?”

“Yeah, you see? Anyone can be nice. I can be nice, you can be nice. But what else are we besides nice? If someone asks me what I thought of Kheng, I’d say oh he’s such a joker. Or like Richard,

We were talking about how we have different groups of friends that we could gel pretty well with. I’m gonna go way back to high school on this one. I had my Dudes and Dudettes who weren’t studious nor cared that much about school. We’d skip class to go to the nearest 7-11 cos we thought it was cool. I had my Back Crew, who were witty and sarcastic as hell. It took me awhile and few embarrassing situations to pick up their sarcasm. Their idea of fun was tricking teachers into believing whatever they were saying was true cos they were so witty. Then there was Trees who were on the nerdier side but didn’t mind looking like an idiot when playing basketball or Frisbee. These were the three main groups that I hung out with towards the end of my high school times. As much as I was my comfortable self in the three groups, the people in the different groups might not necessarily get along well with each other. As the person in the middle of these different groups of identities, what does that make me? Am I a different person when I hang out with different people? I didn’t think so. However I do think that if each group were to be asked to describe me, there will probably be different answers. Dudes and Dudettes would probably call me a smarty for hanging out with Trees, Back Crew would think I was one of the tamer ones among my Chinese “gangster” Dudettes. Trees probably thought I was a …show more content…
It was pretty hilarious at that time. Of course, the conclusion of this was that we don’t just fit into one box.

So I gave a deeper thought to this and tried to find a few constant characteristics of myself that I could be described with with one word, and you should too if you would like to on your next post.

I am easy-going (quoted by Vera), trustworthy (Richard), earth-loving/eco-friendly/”vegetarian” (Kampung MASA), great listener (roommate). To name a few that others had said about me in between conversations that we’ve had. So just think about it, if your friend had to describe you to someone, what would they most likely

Crack open a dictionary and there would be a bountiful of adjectives to describe me. I am quirky but well composed, shy but very loud, and sometimes a bit dimwitted but also secretly a genius. Unfortunately people do not take time to learn things in depth, they simply judge from looks. As a result, to people I am a hispanic girl; a person who probably barely graduated high school, probably lives in the bad side of town, and may indulge in some illegal hobbies here and there. News flash, I am much more than than what hollywood depicts my culture to be.…

I suppose I could have gotten by with less, but I was determined to create some sort of an identity for myself. We'd have one of those "complete the sentence" exercises, and I'd fool with the thing for hours, invariably settling on something like, "A quick run around the lake? I'd love to. Just give me a minute to strap on my wooden leg." The teacher, through word and action, conveyed the message that, if this was my idea of an identity, she wanted nothing to do with it."…

Who am I? A question that would made you think well and might puzzle you out. Describing yourself is harder than describing someone because there are some areas in you that you are not certain of such as characteristics, personalities, and attitude. Also, there are things that other people would notice while we can’t because those things are the things we do that we are not conscious about. Talking about myself, I am Noreen Joyce F. Panganiban, a 16 year-old girl turning 17 this March 2016, from Carmona, Cavite.…

When people ask me to describe myself, I always draw a blank, I never know what to say, I’m caught off guard because I don’t really love talking about myself too often because I am someone who likes to listen rather than to talk. I always have to think about what I should say to make a good impression on whomever is asking me the question. There is a lot about me that you can see by just looking at me; I have short brunette hair, I’m short, hazel eyes, I’m quiet, and more. However, there are certain personality traits about me that every single person I know on a personal basis can tell you; I am candid, I am shy, and I am very loving. I am candid and by candid, I mean I am always very truthful and frank.…
