In society, status and class are two of the most significant social forces that contribute to one’s own image. Not being born in the right social ranking can make life further difficult .This can inhibit the social mobility of an individual if they decide to move up a rung in the ladder of society. This social inequality plays a role in society that few people are able to manage .The social constructs of inequality are far reaching, and it even claws its way into the family. According to Dalton Conley, author of The Pecking Order, “The truth is that inequality starts at home” (pg. 586).…
The third and final example of their use of the rhetoric device pathos is during the scene were the record producer of Girl Talk named Gregg Michael Gillis talks about his work in medicine. This scene in the film was a very well executed use of pathos in many ways. For one they show us that medicine could be much further than it is now but because of the patents that companies have on the most basic of ideas, they cannot use the information that was found to add to their own personal idea. This touches us because there are so many illnesses in the world but because of these patents on the ideas nothing can be done with these ideas except for by the holder of the ideas. Then Gregg begins to tell us “so many things aren’t developed because people…
Collins is able to reach her audience about the importance of women’s perception of the military by using a tailored combination of rhetorical techniques. She believes that women in the military have come a long way from and deserve to fight in combat positions just as men are allowed to do so. To make the audience believe that, she uses strategies like proper organization of ideas, her knowledge about the history of women and including a conversation with an actual female army veteran to establish her credibility which allows for the audience to develop trust. Furthermore Collins does appeal to logic in order to convince her audience members by using statistical data about the number of women in the military. She connects her audience with…
Go into paragraph and talk about how before white males were in power blah blah and how Lincoln wanted to abolish south leaders altogether and how at first American society was not really a democracy at all and how this info in the whole paragraph is America moving one step closer to democracy. In McPherson’s book, he refers to the economic environment of the South as being a slave reliant one in which it greatly depended on its predominantly agriculture and plantation systems, while the North focused more on equality and the rights of the people. African Americans began demonstrating political resistance and acting out against their white slave owners during the Civil War. When Lincoln came into office, the Freedmen’s Bureau surfaced which…
President, I commend you on these matters, and I am not asking for retribution on this matter. I am asking for further, and harsher enforcement on these matters. Don’t be afraid to get tougher, the statistics show it can only get better from here. Should it not boggle the mind that citizens in the USA want rights for someone who we know nothing about, and could possibly hut us. Imagine the Kate Stinley case happening to hundreds of children nationwide.…
In Maria W. Stewart's lecture in Boston in 1832, she conveys her position on the injustices of slavery and the cruelty that slaves experiences through the use of diction, figurative language, and her own personal experience. Altogether, these create a sense of injustice and desparity for the cause of the African Americans and their freedoms and aspirations to be something more than just servile labor. Diction is a major influence in this lecture. With a variety of words, such as "chains", "ragged", "drudgery and toil", "exhausted", "death", and "cruel", Stewart appeals to the feelings of people in an attempt to make them understand the hardships and extreme injustice that encompass the life of a slave. To continue, there is also another set…
Wife of Bath and Gender Roles In the medieval times, Women were perceived to be inferior to men. And because of this stereotype, women were barred from educational and occupational opportunities that men regularly enjoyed. Stuber states, “In the Middle Ages, ideas surrounding masculinity were inherited from classical literature and the Bible. These sources supported male claims to superiority over women.”…
I argue that the Yellow Wall Paper by Charlotte Gilman, and Angels in America by Tony Kushner, both confront the sexual politics of the husband-wife relationships. As much as we may want to believe that inequality is a thing in the past, inequality is very much still present. The stories both symbolize unhappy wives, who not only are in agony, but both women are in torment and feel oppressed in their relationships. According to the novels, women have always come second to the male population. The stories challenge us to contemplate on the oppression and exploitation of women.…
The expectation to sacrifice their happiness and well-being at the demand of their husbands following the loss of authority in their households is exceptionally clear. As if history was repeating itself, the female roles are compelled to be largely associated with the idea of housework and managing domestic affairs. Not to mention, while these women’s marriages are on the verge of crumbling, they are susceptible to the offensive and degrading opinions from oppressive…
Rhetorical Analysis of Truman Capote’s “Nancy’s Bedroom” In the passage, “Nancy’s Bedroom” from the novel, In Cold Blood, the author, Truman Capote, creates a vivid description of Nancy’s bedroom to help the reader connect with Nancy. Capote portrays a descriptive view of her bedroom to convey her personality. He uses many rhetorical strategies to create a feeling of sorrow and reveals the femininity and innocence of young Nancy Clutter.…
Kantz conducted the research for this article as a graduate student. Her professor was Linda Flower and one of her classmates was Christina Haas. This is significant because Haas and Flower have a piece in the same book. This tells the reader that Kantz knows what she is talking about because of her credibility.…
Rhetorical Analysis of Their Finest Hours Their finest hour is a famous speech given by Winston Churchill on 18, June 1940. What happens in the unusual 1940? Let us walk into that year, an extremely terrible year, when England is fluttering about in the storm. Not long before the outbreak of the Second World War, under the Germany’s crazy assault, Austria, Finland, Belgium…have already licked the dust. Maybe the German is fully prepared, France, which claims to be the first power in the European Continent, capitulates to Germany in an unbelievably short time.…
Lexie Brauer Core 101: Dr. Wolbrink Assignment no. 1 September 8, 2017 America: Land of the Men and Home of the Oppressed The phrase “nasty woman” turned into a mass captivation during the 2016 presidential election. For a term that is not in the dictionary, it is used among a variety of peoples’ daily vocabulary. Despite the widespread use, there is no one way it can be defined.…
On the other hand Gus a speaker from Batyr asked us what does the phrase “be a man” or “men don’t cry” actually mean. This introduced a new topic where boys shouldn’t be ashamed of being humans because at the end of the day we all have issues in our lives that many aren’t open to talk about and struggle to share, so crying is what we are left doing but even something like that can bring males to shatter into a thousand pieces. They were always told to “man up” because apparently that’s not what boys do. Well if you feel down speak up because silence can kill. It takes guts to show pain, it takes a man to feel, it takes balls to cry.…
Wisdom as a Woman in Proverbs In this paper I will argue that wisdom is personified as a woman within Proverbs to add desirability to learning. In order to motivate this these, I argue for the following claims: Solomon wrote Proverbs with a specific reader in mind, the bible depicts women as assistants to men, using the personification of a woman makes learning comparable to real women, and by creating a female image wisdom is closely related to the warmth offered by mothers. Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs with his target audience being young men.…
