The purpose and importance of gathering data is to understand the current state and the potential impact of future changes. It is critical to develop a comprehensive mobile device policy within the United States. However, it is essential that leadership understand the potential impact that a policy may have. The policy must both empower employees to effectively perform a job, while also enabling the company’s long-term success. Given that Cummins recently underwent a restructuring due to weak economic conditions, it is especially critical that the cost impact be carefully examined. The United States region accounts for forty-two percent of the distributed mobile devices globally. Fifty-eight percent of the United States population with a mobile device have non-smartphones. It is interesting to note that, of the non-smartphone population, fifty percent of the devices are utilized less than 120 minutes per month. The utilization results raise concern that non-smartphones may not be the best mode of communication. If non-smartphone utilization is so low, it may be possible that another form of communication could be more effective. For example, Cummins recently introduced Skype Advanced, which allows employees to use a laptop to make phone calls. The Skype Advanced technology works well for internal calls to other employees, as all employees with a laptop have the Skype Advanced application. Furthermore, Skype Advanced can be downloaded to a smartphone, allowing for voice and video communication. The Skype Advanced technology is a cost effective means for communication when used over a wireless connection. On another note, as non-smartphone availability is declining, it is important to consider the long-term impact. Flip phone technology is rapidly declining and becoming outdated. Therefore, the company may be limited on the ability to deploy flip phones and other non-smartphones. Therefore, the question of whether non-smartphones …show more content…
The data supports leadership suspicion that the company has loosely provided devices in the past and that the company does not have a standard guidance for addressing future needs. Especially given the current economic state of the industry, the data suggests that Cummins has an opportunity to reduce costs by addressing the current mobile device
