Scenario 4 - Person slaps another person 15 year old Amelia is from a wealthy family, she gets everything she wants as both her parents are very financially stable. However, money does not make her life complete. Ever since she was kid, she witnesses the fight between her parents for the countless time. Her father is violent and aggressive. He always physically abuses her mother in front of her to take out his anger. Later, her parents are divorced but they are still arguing about who would be the one to have her custody. She ended up living with her mother. One day in science class, the teacher puts students in groups for group project. Amelia is not satisfied with her group and asks teacher if she can be in a different

As mentioned in the scenario, Amelia grew up witnessing the abuse and violence in her family. The action of her slapping Lexie because of her aggression is modeled from how her abusive father. The environment she grew up in, she is very spoiled and she always gets her way. Her upbringing leads her to the impatience, therefore she cannot tolerate when she does not get what she wants. Moveover, the way her father deals with his anger by abusing her mother is also one of the factors that makes Amelia imitate such behaviour and take out her aggression by slapping her friend. Therefore, Amelia’s scenario can be explained by nurture theory.

Topography Theory Topographic theory explains different levels of individual’s mind in terms of consciousness; conscious, subconscious, and unconscious. In this scenario, Amelia was in an unconscious stage. The violent motives she received from her father is one of the factors that makes commit this involuntary action. Moreover, Amelia might think that how Lexie’s irrational wishes to call her out in class is shameful experience that embarrassed her. As consequence, these 2 factors of unconscious stage drives Amelia to slap her friend without hesitation.
