Listening and valuing the person’s voice will give us an insight on how the illness started, what was done previously that was not successful. Showing genuineness also contributes to treatment success. Patient with substance dependency or those with other type of mental illness can sense if the nurse is genuine or not. If they feel that the nurse really have their best interest at heart, they are more likely to cooperate and adhere to the treatment plan. We also need to take into consideration that change is constant and not all treatment will be successful as planned. We as nurses have to create a realistic plan of care that also includes patient relapsing and accept that this is part of the process. If relapse happen, we can together with the patient, take a step back and analyze the situation and what can we do together to make it better. Giving the gift of time I think is the most important treatment that we can give the patient. Even if it means listening and understanding to what they have to say can make a big impact.
