At 10 o’clock, Naomi and her mom would drive up through the lush green tree‍‍‍s in the Saratoga Hills. Because her family lived in San Jose, Naomi and her mom had to drive about 45 minutes to get to the horse-riding center called Saratoga Farms.
Soon, Naomi and her mom left the buzzing city and entered the green hills, dotted with tall, healthy-looking oak trees. Naomi thought her mom’s fancy silver BMW stood out from all the greenery.
It was quiet in the car. No music played in the background because Naomi’s mom thought it was too difficult to talk over the music. But still, Naomi wouldn't talk;

“Whitney!” Naomi called.
Whitney turned around, surprised to see Naomi standing there, still with the horse she had ridden for the lesson. “What are you still doing here?” Whitney asked. “This lesson today in going to the last for awhile,” Naomi said with a sad look in her eyes. “Are you going on vacation? Are you taking a break from equestrian?” “My mom is not going to pay for my lessons anymore. She said that they are a waste of time,” Naomi said with tears in her eyes. “Anyway, I was wondering if there was a to get a discount on lessons.” “Well, it’s almost summer vacation. I think the equestrian center is looking for more help around here. If you go up to the main office and talk to the assistant director, I’m sure you can get a summer job,” said Whitney, hopefully. “Thank you,” Naomi said before heading up to the main office.

    It was Saturday lunchtime. The hot summer sun beat down on the faces of the families in the stands during the last Little League game of the season. Moms, finding comfort in the familiar faces of friends forged through three months of uncomfortable green bleachers, bee stings and sunburns, chatted casually about the back-to-school sales for the upcoming year. A handful of men, still intently focused on the games, paced by the backstop, shouting advice to their progeny, perhaps envisioning a MLB baseball legacy.…

    After putting on our bright pink leotards and ballet shoes, which trust me we're not the most fashionable, we went out to the car to wait on Dianna’s mom. I should mention it was still raining as if the earth would flood outside, this made it slightly hard to hear but we ran out to the car anyway. Me, Dianna, and Dalton bolted through the door, sprinting to the car that Dianna had unlocked with the small remote. The cold rain made the humid, hot day not feel as bad as the rest of that summer had been, which was dry and hot. When we got into the car we sat for a bit but then Dianna decided she wanted to turn on the music so she jumps to the front seat of the car.…

    Being forced to abandon a safe haven can cause one to hopelessly cling to the memories created there. In Gerda Klein’s memoir, All But My Life, she and her family are forced to leave their house. In this excerpt, she wanders throughout her garden for one last time. She then starts to reminisce about all the memories created there and realizes that her life will never be the same again, she has truly lost the innocence that her childhood once possessed. Through the use of concrete diction and juxtaposing imagery, Klein establishes a nostalgic yet sorrowful tone to illustrate how one can cling to their past yet cannot avoid the inevitable future, which causes them to see the world around them in a new light.…

Apparently the universe thought the ugly brown color of the siding wasn't enough and bestowed the house with acute scoliosis. The grass grabbed at her and her mother's ankles while they dragged their two suitcases containing their entire lives to the front door. Something about the dark green slab of wood separating them and the inside of their new home gave the appearance of a frown. Laney wasn't sure where in the bad paint job, brass handle, and lock she saw it, but she knew she saw it.…

Within the scene the driver gives a lecture to the main character about life and existentialistic ideas. The scene ends when the other passenger gives direction on where to drop off the main character.
