The first question asked in the readings and discussions that we went through in class is what exactly is the meaning of genre. To me personally, the word “genre” is it describes either a novel, film, video game or music by certain generic ideas or “rules” of what defines that specific genre. Stories can be described through narrative forms, such as if the writing piece is either a short story, a novel or even a poem or narration. Accordingly, stories can even be characterized by either similar themes or settings and/or if they follow a certain structure such as if a book is either defined as comedy or drama.

They also discuss certain books that they have written and how some people have complained that it shouldn’t be classified as a fantasy novel. Nevertheless, both explain how genres are now being mixed and that sometimes, a book cannot be labeled by just one specific type of genre. I agree with some of Neil Gaiman’s statements, such as how he states that the subject of the book doesn’t determine genre and that genres only exist when there’s an abundance of novels that fit that specific genre. I both partly agree and disagree with Kazuo Ishiguro. I agree with how he believes that there are certain patterns that are associated with the genre, however, countless readers and writers take these specifications too seriously, and believe that if you don’t follow the certain “standards” of what makes a specific genre, they believe that it is strange. However, I don’t agree with Ishiguro when he states “Books are serving the same function as certain brands of cars or jewelry, in just denoting social position. That kind of motivation attaches itself to reading in a way that probably doesn’t attach itself to film” (Ishiguro 7). I believe that film can also motivate people the same way that books can motivate
