Thomas More's Influence On John Morton

Born in 1478 in London. Placed into a home as a boy under his Patron John Morton. Thomas More, a very well-known man throughout Europe who decided one day that he was not going to conform to ordinary life. More as a teenager was sent, by his patron, to Canterbury College and learned Greek studies then left to study law at Lincoln’s Inn at his home town. Unfortunately, his Patron, John Morton Died the next year in 1500. More began to seek toughness. By doing this he wanted to prove to everyone that he had tough skin and could endure even the hardest conditions. He wore a very rough shirt that was made out of hair, He used a log for a pillow and on Fridays he would whip himself to practice being tough through pain. Throughout his life Thomas More wanted to be involved in parliament and he did that by involving himself more and more in government throughout his life. In his early life he was under the reign on King Henry VII who brought him into parliament. At twenty-one he was named the “Under-sheriff” of London (More 1). He wanted to give a picture of the civilization he believed would help the world and its current problems. He wants to create a society that humans would be proud of. Such examples of the perfect society that More created are found often throughout his book. More describes the Utopians, “All things are so regulated that men very seldom build upon a new piece of ground” (More 37). More describes men like this because the life they live is a very simple life and if their house needs repair they do not build another right next to it that make the most out of what they have and fix it.
