While reading British literature, authors use an antagonist to portray their point of view
on a specific matter. Some authors may use them to relate to real world events as a satire. It is
clear that in the early Victorian era, and even in today’s age, greed and hubris can bring to the
downfall of an individual. The novel “Sense and Sensibility” by Jane Austen and the novel “A
Room with a View” by E.M Forster both show that an excessive pride in one’s self, as well as
greed and the controlling of other people can become the ultimate demise of an individual.
Both novels portray specific antagonists that are controlling and manipulative. They use these
characteristics to get what they want with the lack of caring for others’ lives.

The novel “Sense and Sensibility” by Jane Austen also displays an antagonist that, due
her actions, eventually leads to her plan failing. Mrs. Ferrars is the main antagonist in this
novel. She is the mother to both Edward and Robert Ferrars. We first get a sense of how evil
Mrs. Ferrars is when her husband’s, John Dashwood, father dies. John Dashwood spoke to his
father last and his last words were to take care of his sisters and his mother. John says “"It was
my father's last request to me," replied her husband, "that I should assist his widow and
daughters."(5) Here the author shows John to have good morals and abiding by his father’s last
request. However, he is soon corrupted by his wife. Mrs. Ferrars says “An annuity is a very
serious business; it comes over and over every year, and there is no getting rid of it.” (6) She is
describing the annual payment to the Dashwoods that was directed by Johns father. She starts
to say that it could be devastating giving out money like that on a yearly basis, especially since
Mrs. Dashwood is healthy. She continues to talk with John and manipulates him with her
words. This eventually leads to the separation of the Dashwood
