Jefferson’s main vision and wish was to make a new America that commanded the trade routes from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. With so doing this forced England, France, and Spain out of North America. Jefferson had previously tried this expedition but was unsuccessful three times. Jefferson was desperate to make his plan successful and set out to find two strong and courageous men to conqueror the expedition.
Jefferson’s first pick was Meriwether Lewis. Lewis was a well-known explorer and soldier from Virginia. He served in the state militia and then later joined the military and received the rank as Captain. In 1801, Jefferson asked Lewis to be his own secretary. Lewis requested the assistance of William Clark, who served with Lewis in the military. Clark was the younger brother to the Revolutionary War hero George Rogers Clark.
