A Comparison Of Lady Macbeth And Elvis Costello's Poetry

Sometimes people are just what they appear to be. Elvis Costello wrote this lyric in a song titled: “Miss Macbeth”, inspired by Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. In this song, Elvis explores Lady Macbeth and her pain derived from her actions. Lady Macbeth is portrayed differently in both works. Shakespeare demonstrates Lady Macbeth as a cruel, unforgiving lady willing to push the boundaries to achieve her goal. Elvis takes an alternate path and depicts Lady Macbeth as a more relatable person overcome with sadness and difficulty. In both works, she is devastated by internal conflict and forces out of her reach. Is Lady Macbeth a bitter person or is she a distraught lady trapped by her faults?
Lady Macbeth lacks all humanity in Macbeth. In her opening scene she calls upon spirits: “Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the

It begs the question: Is she really evil, or just a pantomime? “And everyday she lives out another love song It's a tearful lament of somebody done wrong. Well how can you miss what you've never possessed.” Her life is occupied by grief. How can she be happy if she has never experienced it before? Society has depicted her as an evil woman and she ate the bait. Lady Macbeth in Macbeth had an empty heart and she was not influenced by society. In contrast, her burning desire to become queen forced her to be a gentlewoman in public to attract the king. She enticed the king into her castle so she could kill him. “We are your servants, your highness, and as always our house and everything in it is at your disposal, for after all, we keep it in your trust and we’re glad to give you back what’s yours” (act 1, scene 6). Lady Macbeth’s internal desires are portrayed differently in these works. Elvis shows that she despises being an outcast and how society has pushed her away. Shakespeare establishes Lady Macbeth as a selfish woman with evil

Both Macbeth and the female protagonist are paranoid; Macbeth becomes paranoid after he kills King Duncan and as a result of his paranoia he kills his closest friend Banquo, whereas the woman, on the other hand, is paranoid before she kills as she focuses on the idea that her lover and his mistress are laughing at her “…laugh, laugh at me”. The repetition of ‘laugh’ gives the sense that she may be going insane, also it could suggest that she may just be acting in fury after recently finding out about her lovers mistress. “He is with her and they know that I know”. This reinforces the idea that she is paranoid due to the heavy use of pronouns which show that she is very aware of others around her and she thinks they are deliberately trying to hurt her emotionally. She goes on to say that she knows they think that her ‘tears flow’ but she is actually not grieving, she is putting her plan of murder in to action.…

Macbeth should not merit compassion from the audience, reminding one that he must pay the consequences for his actions. Not only does Macbeth’s character progressively deteriorate throughout the course of the play, but Scotland is thrown into turmoil by Macbeth’s greed and power-hungry nature. It is evident that Macbeth is neither fit to govern, nor fit to live. Through his tragedies, Shakespeare sought to shine a light on the human condition and show how everyday emotions and personality traits could, when taken to the extreme, lead to the downfall of humankind. In the case of Macbeth, Shakespeare wanted to enlighten the audience about the perils of unchecked ambition to humanity.…

Right from the start, Lady Macbeth displays a lack of humanity due to her burning passion to become queen. Through dramatic irony, readers are able to see through her amicability towards King Duncan, characterized by letting him into her own home with open arms, and ultimately, not displaying her true intentions. This passion only becomes stronger and stronger over time as she persuades Macbeth to commit murder, even going as far as questioning his “lack of courage” (Jamieson). Once there is an opportunity for Lady Macbeth to take on a role of power, she jumps at the opportunity, even going as far as convincing her husband to help her take part in gaining power (Jamieson). Based off of the actions and decisions that she made throughout the…

I have made a research and analysis essay of three strong women, where I looked at their stories, discussing their weaknesses and strength, how they reacted to different situations and an analysis of their characteristics with critics and scholars to support my points. Lady Macbeth is in the list of one of the strongest women in english literature, many people and scholars agree on how manipulative, insensitive and inhuman she is because she would step the boundaries of morality to achieve what satisfies her greed, unlike her husband who has morality and sense of humanity in him making their characters completely contrast to each other. And as we see well in her opening scene, when she calls upon the "Spirits that tend on mortal thoughts"…

MACBETH ESSAY Macbeth is a truly tragic man. Discuss. Macbeth, the protagonist of Shakespeare’s tragic play Macbeth, is a man, whose fortune is directly proportional to his desires and ambitions - as he gets more and more carried away with thoughts of future glory, his luck seems to lessen - which makes the play a tragedy. In the start of the play “brave Macbeth” shows himself as a great soldier and king Duncan’s right hand, for which he receives the honor of being Thane of Glamis and Cawdor.…

In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the character Lady Macbeth does not conform to the gender expectations of her time. Her nonconformity is shown through the actions she takes—rebelling against the common notion of feminity by inciting violence—to ensure her husband's, Macbeth's, place as king. The character Lady Macduff serves as a foil to Lady Macbeth and displays how women are expected to behave. Because it seems that Lady Macduff is put forth as an example of the ideal woman, it is expected that she would meet a fate different than Lady Macbeth's, however, both women die by the end of the play. Even though both women die, Lady Macduff's life is sacrificed for the greater good, (halting Macbeth's ruination of the kingdom) and therefore, more honorable than Lady Macbeth's.…
