In Mrs.Yu’s class I had examined and analyzed three of Shakespeare's plays in the past seven months. The plays I read were Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth. Subsequently after, studying them I typed essays comparing the protagonist’s primary character trait, fate, destiny, the theme of the play, and my own reflection on the character overall. After mastering the concept of these plays not only did I get a better understanding of who Shakespeare was, but I also learned why his work is appreciated worldwide. The conflict of the play Hamlet is that Hamlet, the protagonist feels obligated to avenge his father’s death by assassinating his uncle Claudius. This dilemma is comparable to the conflict in Macbeth because in Macbeth 4.3 219-221 Macduff announces “Be comforted. Let’s make us med'cines of our great revenge,To cure this deadly grief.” This proves that Macduff wants revenge on Macbeth, just like Hamlet because Macbeth is saying that to make him feel content he, needs to take a metaphoric medicine, which symbolizes murdering Macbeth. Both Macduff and Hamlet seek revenge because they both lost loved family members from corrupted people’s ambition to obtain more power. Unlike Hamlet and Macbeth, the main conflict of Romeo and Juliet is that the Capulets and Montagues both disapprove of Romeo and Juliet marrying each other. To begin with, Macbeth’s ambition greatly influences his actions. One Prime example of this is in Macbeth 3.1 108-111, here Macbeth tells two murderers “Grapples you to the heart and love of us, Who wear our health but sickly in his life, Which in his death were perfect.” This means that as long as Banquo lives, Macbeth feels sick, however he will be healthy when Banquo is dead. This confirms that Macbeth deals with conflict throughout his own ambition because he is willing to go as far as to killing his own best friend to protect his position as king. Similarly to Macbeth, Romeo’s actions are greatly influences by his own ambition. In Romeo and Juliet 5.1.70-75 where Romeo says“ Art thou so bare and full of wretchedness and first to die? Famine is in thy cheeks. See oppression in thine eyes. Contempt and beggary hangs upon thy back. The world is not thy friend know the world’s law. The world affords no law to make thee rich. Then be not poor, but break it, take this.” This shows that Romeo is impulsive because he convinces the apothecary to break the law so Romeo could kill himself though poison. On the contrary, Macbeth source of motivation for his actions is his loyalty towards his father.
