In the book “East of Eden”, author John Steinbeck includes many biblical allusions, one of which being the story of Cain and Abel, portrayed by Charles and Adam in the first generation, and Cal and Aron as Adam’s children in the second generation. The allusions of original sin and overcoming it by choice not only relate to how biblical characters can be represented in real life but also depict the nature of humanity on the basis of psychoanalysis: are humans naturally good, bad, or it is a matter of choice? In the first generation, Cain is represented by Charles, Adam’s half-brother, who was always jealous that Cyrus loved Adam more than him. The climax happened when Cyrus, the father of both, favoured Adam’s pup, which was picked up in a…

The literary form and genre of the book of Genesis is prose: biblical and historical narrative. Biblical narratives in Genesis show that “God is active in His world” and these narratives typically “chose certain events to reveal God.” For instance, this element is apparent when the Angel of the Lord speaks to Hagar, granting her the promise of descendants (Gen 16:10). In the same manner, this element is reinforced in subsequent chapters (Gen 17:19; 18:10). In describing this book, it is significant to note that most of the characters in the narrative are flawed.…

There are many different creation myths that not only explain the beginning of these particular cultures, but also serve as morals for man and woman to live by. These stories give people reason for their existence and a clear understanding of where they came from. Morals learned throughout these stories such as: don 't disobey God in the book of Genesis, and also the Epic of Gilgamesh when Enkidu is killed because Gilgamesh rejects one of the god’s love, love is powerful also in Gilgamesh with the story of Enkidu and the Harlot where the Harlot changes Enkidu into a better man, , the influence women have on man demonstrated in “From Works and Days”, etc. All these creation myths I believe serve as a basis of morals that people should live by and that 's why we are taught these and study these throughout our lives and in school. I think these stories are also supposed to entertain the reader.…

John Steinbeck’s East of Eden draws comparisons to the Bible throughout the whole book. The allusions to the Bible help to reinforce the fight between good and evil that is at the base of East of Eden. John Steinbeck specifically uses the choices Cal makes in contrast to Cain in the Bible to demonstrate that human kind is born evil and the choices, which are based out of a lack of self-satisfaction, people make are what make them good or evil. Cal from East of Eden is written to mirror the Biblical character Cain. There are some distinct similarities in the characteristics of both characters.…

Sins has befallen humanity in just one short period, which leads to the most important event, Noah and the flood. In Genesis, Cain resents his brother Abel because of the favor he has received with God. Because of his jealousy, Cain lures Abel out into the field and “[w]hen they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him” (Gen. 4.8). In the Book of Genesis, the animosity Cain has for his brother Abel arises out of envy towards him. The Iroquois use the right-handed and left-handed twins to demonstrate how their gods bring order and balance to the world through their opposition. Genesis, however, focuses on how Adam and Eve’s original violation of God’s trust compound with each generation, even to the point of murder because of…

    1) Explain why the author uses Demian for this interpretation of the story Cain and how does it reflect on Sinclair? Throughout the story, the narrator seeks out the knowledge of his who his brother is. This search for knowledge is similar to the story of Adam and Eve. The tale of the creation and the fall shows a moral principle that emerges from the biblical narrative of Adam and Eve on which both biblical fundamentalists and biblical critics can agree: merely seeking knowledge of good and evil is problematic. As stated in the King James version of the Bible 3:6 the tree was “desired to make one wise”. By fulfilling her desire to achieve the knowledge of good and evil, she consumed the fruit of the tree, disregarding an ethical directive to the contrary.…
