Arcite was granted his freedom from King Theseus, but faced banishment from Theseus’ kingdom from then on. In Arcite’s case, banishment was a fate worse than imprisonment. Arcite exclaimed he was doomed eternally to dwell no more in Purgatory, but in Hell. Being banished from the kingdom meant there would be no way for Arcite to see Emily again which devastated him. Arcite believed Palamon blissfully served his indenture in paradise rather than prison - as Palamon had Emily’s presence while he had the loss. Though he was free, Arcite was still not satisfied.
