In both short stories, “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman reveals that appearance can be deceiving. In “The Story of an Hour,” the main character called Mrs. Mallard a fragile and emotional woman who is suffering from heart disease, one day received the news that her husband has died in a train accident from her sister. Mrs.Mallard retired to her room, but not to cry, but to scream of happiness the word “free, free, free” from her window room. This reveals, that appearance can be deceiving because maybe her husband thought she was happy with her marriage and she loved him. However, she did not love him because she did not feel independent and free with him. In “The Yellow Wallpaper,”
