Character Analysis: There But For The By Ali Smith

Imagine a person you never really thought much of left a huge impact on your life and then disappeared. That is how Miles Garth left Anna and May feel after he vanished from their lives in the book There But For The by Ali Smith. Although he may have overstayed his welcome and caused a burden in a few of the characters lives, he is a charismatic person that only does things for the better of the people he cares about. Through analyzing Miles relationships with two of the main characters, it is clear that he has impacted most of these characters lives for the better. “On the way back to Paris, when everybody crowds the scrumming for seats on to the bus, he catches the edge of her jacket in his hand when she passes his table(Smith, Ali).” This shows that Miles does care about Anna, even …show more content…
Throughout the rest of the book, Miles does very small things to make Anna feel welcomed and loved. “Your passport, he says. They took them, Anna says. They took mine. Did they not take yours?... He holds something up. It's a passport. It's open at the photo page. The photo is of her.” This passport signifies the bond that these two teenagers share. They started talking due to the fact that she was an outsider because the trip took away her ability to feel at home as a result of her strong Scottish accent. When she does meet someone, however, she gets her confidence back which is when she is given her passport by the same person that talked to her in the first place. Miles went the extra mile for her to steal her passport back which also signifies how, when he cares for someone, he will do whatever it takes to make them feel comfortable in who they are. “Some of the same people she sat next to on the bus ride back have kept her a seat(Smith, Ali).” She was able to make a good personable impression with the people on the bus because she was given a chance due to Miles kindness and willingness to take a chance. “The difficulty we have in making genuine human connections
