This paper contains two commentaries on our Sunday Morning Worship Services at Rivers Chapel United Methodist Church. The first commentary dealt with the “Word and Table Service” (January 3, 2016). The second commentary deals with January 10, 2016 service on Baptism. The January 3, 2016 Worship Service Program follows the 2016 (Year C) Lectionary Calendar found on the internet. The program not only gave the order of service, it also provided information concerning what period of the Christian year we were worshipping in. On the program, we introduced the season of Epiphany which is the period of the visit of the Magi and the baptism of the Lord. The table is covered in white and prepared with the Holy Communion. After the sermon hymn, the pastor comes forward with prayer and scripture (Matthew 2:7-12). The morning message was entitled “They Worshiped Him”. After about a fifteen minute sermon, the pastor gives the invitation to discipleship followed by the service of communion (The Great Thanksgiving) reading from the “Book of Worship” page 58 while the congregation uses the “United Methodist Hymn” page 13 for which they are instructed where to come in by the pastor. With the invitation from the pastor, the members of the congregation and guest come to the altar. The pastor goes through the “Words and Table Service” that relates to the Magi found in the “Book of Worship” , blessed the bread and wine, and presents them to the congregation as the body and blood of our Lord and Savior – Jesus The Christ. When all had received both bread and wine, she instructed them to eat and drink as they remember Jesus and the reason for his death. The congregation is led in song by the pastor who extinguishes the candles and dismisses the congregation with prayer and instructions to go forward and make …show more content…
The congregation is instructed to stand as the sermon hymn “I Need Thee Every Hour” is song. As the congregation takes their seat, the pastor comes with prayer, scripture and sermon (“Showing the Holy Spirit in you”) from Luke 3:22. The sermon focused on the fact that people should see a change in you after baptism. It was a fifteen to twenty minute sermon on the importance of Baptism and its effect on your life. Your life should not be to please you and other, but to glorify God. The pastor ended the sermon with an invitation to discipleship and prayer. The candles were extinguished and remarks were made by the pastor. The service ended with a dismissal with blessing and instructions to let your light shine that other may see God in
