Being in middle school or high school, the last thing you want to be is an outcast. Being an outcast can lead to depression, anxiety and many other problems. With the fear of being alone and socially isolated, teenagers turn to fashion as a solution. The concept of materialism is something that is instilled in our heads today and it is a cause of why humans buy certain things. These teens want to be accepted and owning the right brands seems to fulfill this social requirement. “Given that consumers attempt to gain acceptance into social groups through the products that they purchase, findings relating to materialism might explain why the luxury brand market has become increasingly important to teens.” (Gil 1427) Using these material goods, teens can express themselves and be able to identify with a certain social group and feel a sense of togetherness.
Another way to gain social acceptance is by acquiring popularity, because when you are popular everyone loves you and gives you attention. During our teenage years, since we are still trying to figure out who we are and as teenagers we want to be someone that everyone knows and loves. This is exactly what these fashion trends can provide for us. During the interview on the Adidas Yeezy one of the customers said “I suppose there is an element of status to it. When
I walk up the street in a pair of Yeezys, the recognition you get is crazy. I 'll have people stopping me to take a photograph.” This shoes which serve as status symbols garner the attention of many and gives the owner the popularity and attention that they are seeking.
