During the story, there was a common occurrence between the characters and how they acted. Based off this story, it seemed that for most people their life didn’t matter, and they would do anything to avoid their real feelings. “Some lived in it and never felt it but he knew it all was nada y pues nada y nada y pues nada.”(5). This translates to nothing and after that nothing, etc. The word nothing or nada is repetitive throughout this whole story. They believe that life is nothingness and anything you do will mean nothing. The author is trying to get across that no matter what you think you live for, it is really nothing and whatever choices you make will affect nothing. The meaning of nothing “It was not a fear or dread. It was a nothing that he knew too well. It was all a nothing and a man was nothing too. It was only that and light was all it needed and a certain cleanness and order.”(4-5). The reason behind the waiter and the old man for liking the light and cleanness was because it all meant nothing. Also, both the old man and waiter had no idea what their problem was, was because their feeling were nonexistent.
