“A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” by Ernest Hemingway is a powerful and efficient investigation about the meaning of life. This story is about a young and older waiter in a Spanish café waiting for an old man to leave before closing. What they didn’t know was that the old man had recently attempted to commit suicide last week, but was rescued by his niece. It was getting late and the younger waiter wanted to close up the café and throw the old man out already. However, in the other hand, the older waiter wanted to reflect on the differences between a well-lit place such as the café and a dark smoky bodega known as a bar. A moral from this story to reflect on would be that there are many people struggling from despair everyday, but humanity should …show more content…
This quote implies that humans can carry a lot of selflessness and become empty vessels when they don’t have truthful lives. At this point in life, it felt as if both of the older men felt that the value of their existence was insignificant. The older waiter expressed, “...Our nada who art in nada, nada be thy name…daily nada and nada us our nada…hail nothing full of nothing is with thee…” (Hemingway, 6). The moment, the older waiter substituted the Spanish word “nada” meaning nothing, into his prayers to God, it made him feel connected because its part of his religion. His religion which several of people turn to, are in hopes of seeking to find a meaning in those prayers, but the older waiter can’t and on purpose defines the prayer into …show more content…
Insomnia is a condition that prevents you from sleeping. This condition can play a symbol of negativity in this story, which seems to ruin peoples lives and it seems to never go away. The older waiter reasons himself by thinking that “many must have it.” The quotation mark means that several of people in the world suffer from a vague sense of nothingness that can plague them. The older waiter is not alone though, perhaps the old man is also afraid of sleeping or can’t sleep. Maybe that is why he wants to stay at the café at night. The old man prefers to stay somewhere quiet rather than being at home and trying to

Out of all the situations we face in life, knowing that tomorrow is guaranteed is something that no person is for sure of. The poem, “Summer Solstice, New York City” by Sharon Olds is a perfect example of the uncertainties in life. This short poem deals with an immensely suicidal man meeting death's face to face at the edge of a building’s roof in New York City while he is surrounded by policemen. At first, this poem seems to be primarily about a depressed man being talked out of suicide by the policemen, and concluding with a happy ending to everyone smoking a cigarette; however, through a deeper study, the poem shows the true meaning behind the fragility of life, not only for a suicidal man, but for every one of us. To begin, it is obvious…

The narrator demonstrates the central theme of the fiction story “A Clean Well Lighted Place” by Ernest Hemingway by having three age groups young, mid aged and older view the meaning of life. I believe that the theme of the story is that life has no desired meaning, and that everyone ends the same way, alone and dead in the ground. In the story life was viewed differently by the ages of each character described because they all have different situations and beliefs. The young waiter finds joy in his wife, the older waiter helps others, and the old man escapes by drinking. Although life is full of nothing but existence finding methods to cope with this strange reality is necessary to survive the most darkest thoughts.…
