ooking at the film A Class Divided , talks about a third grade teacher Ms. Jane Elliot, she wanted to teach and show her students the evil of discrimination . A quote from Jane Elliot explains the depth of emotions and motivation for the experiment, “I thought this is the time now to teach them really what the Sioux Indian prayer that says, oh Great Spirit, keep me from ever judging a man until I have walked in his moccasins, really means” (Frontline,1985). Ms. Elliot divided her class by eye color “brown and blue” the students who had the blue eyes were told how much better they were with the kids with brown eyes (smatter, neater and nicer). These students received extra time for play , while the students with the brown eyes did not receive this privilege as the students with blue eyes. …show more content…
Elliot states when you tell a person they are superior or suck they will act in a certain way. Ms. Elliot used phonics card and the brown eyed students took over in about five minutes on day one because they were beneath the blue eyed students, however the following day when they were superior , they acted in the manner of superior and finished the deck of cards in over two minutes. There were few ethical issues in this film, no consent forms were signed by the parents of the students, you cannot have students coerced into participation of the study. This experiment went against section 3.10 –informed consent. When your conducting a research, therapy or assessment you need to get the individual permission about the treatment that will take place in order for them to decide whether or not they wish to undergo a treatment or test. This process of understanding the risks and benefits of treatment is known as informed consent. (American Psychological Association, 2017). The experiment misleads the students and also created agitated situation for children.
