A Class Divided Assignment
Part A
Watch both videos and answer the following questions:
1. Why did the teacher use this activity in her classroom?
The teacher used this activity in her classroom to show the children what it feels like to be discriminated against. She did not think that they could fully understand something as complicated as discrimination without showing them.
2. What happened when she divided the class?
When she divided the class, at first the children disagreed that the blue-eyed children were not any better than the brown-eyed children. The blue-eyed children immediately started to act differently toward the brown-eyed children.
3. On Day 1, how did the behavior of the blue

At one point, Jane comments on how she has learned to be brown-eyed. How is that relevant to current discussions of race and ethnicity today? This is relevant because many people try to fit in and be more like whoever is “superior” in society.

Answer the following questions:
1. Do you know anyone who has been treated differently in a manner such as depicted in the "learning experiment"?
Even though it is not race, I do know someone who was discriminated against based on sex. My dad worked with a woman who had been doing home loans for twenty something years. A man who also worked there had been doing home loans for less than half the time this woman had. A position as a branch manager opened up, and the less experienced, less qualified man got the job rather than the woman. There was no other reason other than their sex that was the determining factor for this promotion.
2. What was the most meaningful part of the video for you?
The most meaningful part of the video was the fact that Jane was so passionate about this subject. I agree with her on the fact that discrimination is a problem, and it should not be. I wish I could do something as meaningful as she did to try and prevent discrimination from

    Jane Elliott Summary

For this chapter what I found very interesting was the experiment done by Jane Elliott. While watching her video I found myself becoming frustrated with the way she was treating the blue-eyed people. I am very aware of racial issues that colored people are experiencing in our society today. I am not defending racial discrimination, but I don’t think its fair to say that white people aren’t discriminated against like black people are. Its not fair to judge a whole race of people based on one persons actions.…

In the video, “‪Eye of the Storm Featuring Jane Elliott Training Video or DVD TrainingABC‬,” Jane Elliot explains how a blue-eyed is more superior to anyone who has brown eyes. She goes on to say that “the blue-eyed people will get 5 more minutes of recess and the brown-eyed people with have to use a cup to drink from the fountain” (TrainingABC, 2013). Even though I believe Elliot thought this would work in all generations, I don’t agree with that at all. Parents should not allow their children to go through with this because it could cause discrimination based on eye color and it can cause them hurt in the long run. In this video, Elliot discussed how a certain eye color means that you are better than another.…

The experiment “A Class Divided” was performed in order to prove that prejudice and stereotypes can influence a “superior” group’s opinion on an “inferior” group, and in this specific experiment, the discrimination was based on two different eye colors of a group of elementary school students. And sadly, the outcome verified the hypothesis, as the experimenter Jane Elliott witnessed a group of “marvelous, cooperative, wonderful, thoughtful children turned to nasty, vicious, discriminating third-graders.” On the first day of the experiment, Jane Elliott first set up the discrimination between blue-eyed superior and brown-eyed inferior. And by which she meant that the blue-eyed get extra recess, can drink water directly from the water fountain, can have seconds at lunch and can play anytime on the playground equipment; while the brown-eyed must only use a paper cup to drink from the fountain, may not play with blue-eyed children and must stay off the playground equipments.…

As a child you do not completely understand to concept of discrimination. A child’s understanding of discrimination would be untainted until they actually have the chance to experience it for themselves. In “On Being the Target of discrimination” Ralph Ellison shares his experiences with discrimination as a child and how his experiences impacted…

The Imitation of Life and The Bluest Eye were two pieces of work that let their audience take a look at the world through the eyes of females in the 1930s. The Imitation of Life debuted in 1934 and was produced by John Stahl. Because it was set and made in a time before the Civil Rights Movement, there were a lot of guidelines that the production crew had to conform to that so the “wrong” message was not being displayed. There was a lot of scandal behind the making of the movies because many felt as though Louise Beavers, who played Aunt Delilah, should have received an Oscar for her performance in the movie but she did not because of the color of her skin.…

It was not as if they were making up how racism was a problem and that people were not treated equally in the eyes of the law. Producing the video definitely felt strange. However, reading aloud and then watching myself on my laptop deepened the meaning of what I was saying. Another lesson taken away from this assignment was the fact that there are no women’s rights organizations asking for the banishment of this book. Women were treated poorly in this book, which was also a fact of the past, and there seems to be no issue.…

.Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on race or color and specifically makes race-based employment decisions illegal. You can't hire people based on race or color, and once hired, you can't make decisions to promote employees, give them raises and benefits, and assign responsibilities based on race or color. Also, when considering salaries or promotion, it is discrimination to give raises or promotions to one racial group over others who performed equally well. Racial discrimination at the work place can be broken down into three different types.…

To identify the student, she had the students wear felt collars. On the first day, Miss Elliots discriminated against the brown eye students and praise the blue eye students. For example, she would say that the blue eye students are smarter, well behaved and more neat. The next day Miss Elliot will switch the collar and discriminated against the blue eye students. This reenactment shows a “fascinating intellectual implication”(31-34).…

It was inevitable that the sound of laughter from children his own age, the buoyant jokes they 'd utter and the encouraging words they’d say to one another would cause numerous questions to run through his mind, "How does it feel to be like them? To not be ashamed of who they are and where they’d come from? " It’d leave him wondering how it would feel to be accepted. It’s tough to imagine children experiencing something as horrid as discrimination, it’s even harder to believe they’re also the ones causing it. How they see the universe and everybody in it is influenced by those around them.…

    Essay On Police Equality

There are equality issues still going on in today's society; I’ve noticed this through police brutality, felons are not allowed to have weapons even for protection, and people not getting hired for jobs because of their appearance. Equality is the act of treating every individual the same and people coming together no matter the race or differences within every person. If the whole world thought like MArtin luther King when he said, “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word”, the world would be a better place. Police violence has impacted the world in bad way for many, many years. Police violence is mostly affected by the African Americans.…

On the first day of the experiment, she gave all the children with blue eyes a lower position than the brown-eyed group by marking them with green armbands (Bloom). Her students were told that all of the black children were very intelligent and clean so they have enough ability to do everything better than the white ones because the color of their hair, skin and eye are caused by a chemical named “Melanin”. The blue-eyed students wrecked every single nice items Jane gave them. A young boy questioned why Jane has blue eyes but she can still be a teacher. The answer was that she would have sat in place of a leader like a principal or a superintendent if her eye color had been brown.…

Discrimination is defined as the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. Unfortunately, discrimination is not uncommon. We probably have all been discriminated or witnessed some form of discrimination at one point in our lives.
