The Purpose Of A Church

Some people begin a debate when is comes to the thought of what a church is. Is it a building? Or is it the people, that create the church? There are many perspectives on this topic. Here is my view on this topic. Throughout my whole life, I have been taught that the “church” was not the building. It was the people inside the building. Some people may state scripture and say that it is the building that one is in, such as Matthew 16:13-20. Here it states that Jesus asked his disciples who people thought he was. Some thought a prophet. Then Christ asked Simon Peter and he responded saying, “You are the Messiah, the son of the living God.” A little later on Jesus says that on this rock I (Jesus) will build my church. Do I think that he was …show more content…
Without people, it is just a building. In the bible it states, where to or more are gathered, there I am also. It does not say that where the building stands, I am there too. We create the church which means church can be even in the middle of the field. What is the purpose of the church? So we can praise and worship among other believers and receive encouragement as well from them. Acts 2:42-47 shares that the believers meet together in the temple courts. But they did not just gather at the temple courts, they also gathered in one another’s homes and broke bread and ate together while still giving praises to God. Here is shows that they congregated and persistently gave praise to God in other places rather than the temple, …show more content…
If people feel closer to Christ when they are in a church then that is what they should continue to do, however, I feel that I can feel close with Christ whenever I am just around Godly people. Another way I think about it is, I cannot learn anything from a building, however I can absorb so many more insightful thoughts and examples from all kinds of PEOPLE. We are the church, we are not restricted and ordered to stay in a building. We are called to grow the church (the family of God), which means that we need to move outside of our comfort zones, out of the “church” building. Move the church to those who are seeking something

Therefore, the main purpose of the church is to proclaim and advance the Kingdom of God on earth today. For example, our handout quotes Scot McKnight who says, “The modern Western Gospel tends to stop here, with what McKnight calls the “plan of salvation.” The plan of salvation is part of the gospel, but not the entire gospel. The Kingdom is an essential part of the Gospel as Jesus, Paul, and the early church proclaimed it” (Peterson 7). This truth is evident all the way through the book of Acts and especially with Paul who went to the far reaches to announce the Kingdom, in contract to the church in Jerusalem who I believe was still holding out for ‘their kingdom’ to be established.…

The church contains four marks and the people must bear these marks of the church both visibly and in the body. The church is one and unified, though this may be hard to grasp considering all the fragments in the church. The church receives holiness, the second mark, because of Christ’s sacrifice. Church is catholic, meaning that it is universal and whole.…

Introduction The concept of “church” was started as the tabanacle where the Ark of Covenent was placed (Old Testament). Then it was transferred into the “Temple building” where people experienced God’s presence. When Jesus came to dwell among people, He was the Temple instead of the building. He confirmed it; “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days” (John 2:19 NIV).…
