On December 9th at 7 p.m. in the Little Theatre, my sister and I went to go see San Juan College’s production of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The interpretation of this play was directed by Dallas Padoven, a guest artist. The plot of A Christmas Carol is that Ebenezer Scrooge thinks it's all humbug, criticizing his faithful clerk, Bob Cratchet, and his cheerful nephew, Fred, for their views. Later, Scrooge encounters the ghost of his late business partner, Jacob Marley, who warns that three spirits will visit him this night. The ghosts take Scrooge on a journey through his past, present and future in the hope of transforming his bitterness. This is a very popular Christmas story, and I was not disappointed, despite Zoe’s remarks about me being a Scrooge around this time of year. I will be analyzing the scene when Jacob Marley comes to

It takes place in Scrooge’s bedroom. The stage was lit in a way to make it feel sickly and dead. Marley himself looked very, dead. He was pale with bruising on the side of his face with his head wrapped in a bandage, implying he had a toothache. His clothes were torn, and he was nearly covered from head to toe in a mass of chains. He carried a chain with a heavy metal box at the end, and walked with a limp due to the encumbering chains he carried. Overall this interpretation of Marley was accurate. The actor spoke as if he were actually in despair and his monologue was cautionary and sad. During his monologue, Marley had the sounds of chains and groans of “tormented souls” accompanying him. This was a nice touch to the scene, and sent shivers down the audience’s spines, however it was too loud. The actor himself did not have a mic, and the chains at some parts overtook the performance. It was really hard to listen, and took away from the scene. If the noises were brought down to a lower dynamic, then this scene would have much more of an
